Yelena Rochshina’s Journey to Job Success in Canada
My name is Yelena Rochshina, and I am from Kazakhstan. In June 2022, I arrived in Winkler, Manitoba, Canada, with extensive experience in teaching and office administration. Since my arrival, I’ve started my inspiring journey of growth and integration, achieving significant milestones in my professional career.
My Employment Journey Before and After Arriving in Canada
Before arriving in Canada, I proactively prepared for the job market. I attended online workshops and training sessions that equipped me with essential skills and knowledge about the Canadian employment landscape. This preparation paid off when I landed a part-time position as an IELTS instructor and a full-time role as a Settlement Worker at Regional Connections in August 2022. By September 2023, I had advanced to the position of Settlement Lead at the same organization. Although my current job is different from what I used to do in Kazakhstan, it makes good use of my communication and community engagement skills and matches my passion for helping others.
The Role of SOPA in My Success
I, first, learned about SOPA (Settlement Online Pre-Arrival) through a letter from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Registering for SOPA’s courses was a game-changer. The structured courses, informative videos, practical tasks, and role-play scenarios gave me a deep understanding of Canadian employment culture. These resources were instrumental in my successful job search and settlement.
Participating in courses such as ‘Working in Canada’, ‘Soft Skills Workplace Communication‘, and ‘Soft Skills Working with Others’ offered me valuable insights into the nuances and expectations of the Canadian workplace. The guidance from SOPA employment counsellors was especially beneficial, addressing my concerns and helping me navigate the job market with confidence. One of the highlights of my SOPA experience was connecting with other future immigrants through online networking events and conversation circles, fostering a supportive community that made me feel welcomed and understood. SOPA’s comprehensive support significantly reduced the uncertainties of settling in a new country, equipping me with the knowledge and confidence to secure a job that aligns with my skills and interests.

To overcome these obstacles, I applied for various positions and attended numerous interviews to practice my skills and understand the types of questions asked. This proactive approach helped me improve my interview techniques and gain a better understanding of the job market.

Upon arriving in Canada, I immediately began volunteering as an interpreter and translator, gaining valuable Canadian work experience. Networking played a crucial role in my journey; I actively built connections and maintained professional relationships, which proved invaluable in securing employment. Additionally, my current employer’s support and guidance have been instrumental in my professional growth.
