Aamir’s Journey to Find Success in Canada’s Job Market
When Aamir looked ahead to his move to Canada earlier this year, 2025, he saw more than a new home, he saw a fresh start, a world of opportunity, and the chance to take his career to new heights.
Originally from Doha, Qatar, Aamir brings over 11 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, having worked as both a Radio Frequency Engineer and a Technical Support Engineer. But like many newcomers, he knew that continuing his career in a new country would require preparation, insight, and support.
That’s when he found SOPA (Settlement Online Pre-Arrival).
Discovering SOPA: From Uncertainty to Confidence
Referred by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Aamir enrolled in the SOPA Pre-Arrival Program and was quickly matched with Employment Services Advisor, Josephine Wang.
“She has been absolutely amazing, providing invaluable guidance and recommending multiple courses to help me become familiar with the Canadian workplace. Her support has significantly alleviated my anxiety and uncertainty about what to expect when I arrive in Canada.”
With Josephine’s support, Aamir dove into SOPA’s Job Search Strategies course, learning about Canadian workplace culture, how to craft a tailored resume and cover letter, and how to network effectively, both in person and online. He didn’t just learn about job searching—he gained the confidence to strategize and plan.
Even before setting foot in Canada, Aamir began building his professional network and researching employers that aligned with his goals. His thoughtful, proactive approach positioned him for success from the moment he arrived.
Tools, Techniques, and Transformation
Aamir’s SOPA journey wasn’t just about learning, it was about transformation.
“The mock interview sessions helped me practice and refine my responses to common interview questions, making me more confident and prepared for real interviews.”
He also explored targeted resume writing, Canadian job market research, and licensure guidance—crucial insights for anyone hoping to transition into the workforce quickly and effectively.
“SOPA addressed my settlement and employment concerns by providing comprehensive support and resources… The program equipped me with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the Canadian job market confidently.”
A Blueprint for Career Success
Aamir wasn’t just preparing for a job, he was preparing for a career in Canada. His strategies included:
- Volunteering in his field to gain Canadian experience
- Attending networking events and industry meetups
- Customizing job applications for each position
- Conducting informational interviews to connect with professionals and learn directly from insiders
“Participating in SOPA has greatly transformed my approach to seeking employment in Canada.”
He’s already applying what he’s learned by connecting with professionals, refining his online presence, and preparing for job search success from day one.
Advice for Fellow Newcomers
Aamir offers thoughtful, practical advice for others who are preparing to move:
“Make sure your resume and cover letter highlight relevant skills and experiences, are clear, concise, and free of errors… Use LinkedIn, attend networking events, and volunteer. Familiarize yourself with Canadian culture and social norms. Be patient and persistent.”
The Impact of SOPA
What makes Aamir’s story stand out is how clearly it shows the impact of the SOPA program, not just on employment outcomes, but on newcomer confidence and preparedness.
“Tailoring my resume and cover letter to highlight my relevant skills and experiences was a game-changer… SOPA encouraged me to build my professional network… These experiences have not only alleviated my anxiety but also boosted my confidence.”
